Driving Her to An Unprotected Square

It is true that a player is obliged to protect his queen as the queen protects the whole army in return. In the given position, black’s back rank proved to be a weak spot making his own king vulnerable to attack. A rook sacrifice by white will dislodge black’s king but a hole on f6 guarantees his escape. Let’s see how white took advantage of the diagonal a1-h8. Wanke-Wegener (1972)
Solution: 1. Re8! BxR 2. QxR Kg7 3. Qf8+ Kf6. 4. Bd4! driving the queen to unprotected square... QxB 5. Qh8+ Ke7 6. QxQ resign.
